Michele Scott began her TRIO Work experience in 1980 as a counselor /counselor coordinator for Volunteers of America’s Educational Talent Search project in Los Angeles, CA. In 002, she began her current position as the director of the Educational Opportunity Center at California State University, Long Beach.
Ms. Scott was the 2009-2010 Western Association of Educational Opportunity Personnel (WESTOP) president and utilized her skills on the Board of Directors and Service Council in various capacities, including Professional Development Chair and Co-Chair of the 2005 & 2014 Annual Conferences. She is a member of the President’s Council and currently the Archives chairperson on the Service Council. She performed many duties during her four years on the Board of Directors for the Council for Opportunity in Education, including co-chairing the 2012 and 2017 conferences.
Ms. Scott was the sixth of eight children from a single-parent household and first to receive a bachelor’s degree. She attributes her quest for higher education to her mother and maternal grandmother, who encouraged her to put God first, help others, and go to college for greater career opportunities. She graduated from Oakwood (College) University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Behavioral Science and the University of Phoenix with a Master of Arts degree in Organizational Management. She is the proud mother of her favorite and only son, Loren Scott Richmond.
Ms. Scott has served on a variety of local advisory committees including the Long Beach Job Corps and Cal SOAP Advisory Committees, Southern California Conference of Seventh-Day Adventist Region Committee (2 terms); and currently sit on the Lynwood Community Adult School Advisory Committee.
Ms. Scott has been the recipient of several awards including, the 2007 NAACP Long Beach Chapter Shero Award, 2002 and 1996 Exemplary Award from South Coast Consortium of Schools, Steve Holeman Award- WESTOP-2012, and Doreen de Los Santos Award – So Cal WESTOP- 2014.
